How Medicare Works
Please apply for Medicare Part A and Part B starting 90 days before the first day of the month you turn 65.
Medicare (parts A and B) covers 80% of your medical costs.
- Part A covers' hospital stays.
- Part B covers doctor visits and other outpatient care.
It might take up to 45 days to get your Medicare card after you apply through the Social Security Administration. So don’t wait.
If you qualify for Medicare, Part A usually has no cost. Part B has a monthly fee, depending on your income.
Social Security and Medicare are two individual programs that require separate enrollments with the Social Security Administration.
Most people enroll in Medicare at age 65. But many people wait until age 67 — when they are fully eligible — to begin getting Social Security benefits.

What are Medicare Supplement Plans?

These plans have a monthly premium but usually no copays for doctor visits (once the Part B deductible is met) and no network restrictions. You can see any provider who accepts Medicare.
